XIAOGANG ZHANG

Born in Kunming, in the Chinese province of Yuannan, in 1958, Zhang is considered as one of the most famous and most required Chinese contemporary artist, particularly popular among foreign collectors.

His artworks are strongly influenced by the story of his family. This is clearly shown in his first and also the most important collection “Bloodline”. The protest of 1989 in Tiananmen square also had a strong influence on the artist:

In my opinion, art and life are a unique concept, working in the art means also having a life. However my thought has no sense since the sanguinary event of 1989. From then on I understand that an individual is completely insignificant in front of the destiny. (Zhang Xiaogang 《“1989-1991” return to the human world》).

Today the artist, nearly sixty years old is known not only in China, but all over the world for his artworks. After many moments of depression, he has always been able to find new motivations in art and has now become the representative of oriental art. The main feature of Xiaogang’s works is the importance of feelings, which can be found (and felt) under the surface and behind the images. He uses his own language in a particular way, with the ability to create new figures, which go much further and deeper than the portraits themselves.
