THE ARTWORK

-

Takashi Murakami comments about this work: "Dob is a self-portrait of the Japanese people. He is cute but has no meaning and understands nothing of life, sex or reality".

Actually, the main character in the Superflat art piece is Mr. Dob, who completely follows the philosophy of the kawaii aesthetic, representing characteristics of "cute" and "lovely". From the artist's perspective, it is the portrait/metaphor of postmodern japanese people. Their incapability to overcome all the anxiety and the trauma caused by the defeat during World War II and the following United States's occupation caused, developed into a "childish" society.
